US President Donald Trump has made it clear who foreign leader he believes can assist America in putting an end to the conflict as the war in Ukraine approaches its fourth year: Xi Jinping, an ally of Vladimir Putin.
“Hopefully, China can assist us in putting an end to the conflict, especially the one between Russia and Ukraine. Last month, Trump said to business and political leaders assembled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, “We’ll work with them because they have a lot of power over that situation.”
In a phone conversation with the Chinese leader just days before taking office last month, Trump stated that hope on multiple occasions. As international leaders convene in Munich for an annual security summit, the topic may be brought up in the days ahead.
Although Trump’s decision to impose a 10% tax on Chinese imports into the US earlier this month may have complicated his desire to work with Xi to broker peace, the conflict in Ukraine may be an uncommon instance of cooperation, particularly as Beijing seeks to prevent escalating trade tensions.
Given the stakes in US-China relations, Yun Sun, director of the China Program at the Stimson Centre think tank in Washington, stated, “I think China will be very tempted … (and could) play a helpful role if Trump prices China’s cooperation as the one critical issue that could improve US-China relations. However, she noted that Beijing would be cautious about weakening its ties with Russia.
