According to Sir Keir Starmer, a “US backstop” would be necessary for any peace agreement including Ukraine in order to prevent Russia from attacking its neighbour once more.
Following a hurried meeting with European leaders in Paris, the prime minister reiterated that if a sustainable peace deal were reached, he would think about sending UK troops to Ukraine.
However, he stated that “a US security guarantee was the only way to effectively deter Russia and promised to speak with US President Donald Trump about the “key elements” of a peace agreement when they meet in Washington next week. According to Sir Keir, Europe will “have to do more” to protect the continent from Russia’s “generational” security threat.
His supporters speculate that a “backstop” may include air support, logistical, and intelligence capabilities, although he was careful to avoid giving specifics. European leaders met in the Élysée Palace to voice their concerns about the Trump administration’s decision to start peace negotiations with Russia. The talks are scheduled to begin in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv was unaware of the negotiations and would not accept any deal reached without its participation. US officials have indicated that while European countries would not directly participate in peace negotiations with Russia, they would be consulted.
