A new tab is opened by Amazon (AMZN.O). The retail behemoth vehemently resisted organised labour at its locations across the US, won a significant victory when North Carolina workers decided against establishing a union. A setback for union officials who have long wanted Amazon due to the wide range of businesses it touches, including manufacturing, data processing, warehousing, and trucking, was the opposition of around three-quarters of voters. For the union to be formed, a simple majority of the 4,300 employees at the warehouse in Garner, North Carolina, close to Raleigh, had to vote.
The results of this week’s vote were announced on Saturday by the National Labour Relations Board, or NLRB. 829 voters supported joining a union, while 2,447 opposed it. While union representatives have stated that collective bargaining is the only way to improve working conditions and wages, Amazon has maintained that its employees are better off having direct contact with the corporation than through organised labour.
According to a statement from the company, it was “glad” that employees “chose to keep a direct relationship with Amazon.” In a statement, union organisers said that Amazon’s “relentless and illegal effort to intimidate” workers was behind the vote.
