On Thursday, the US Department of Transportation announced that it was seeking public input on whether airlines should be compelled to compensate customers in cash when their actions cause flight disruptions.
As it begins the regulation process, the USDOT is allowing the public to provide feedback for 60 days but has refrained from releasing a formal proposal. Whether rules are pursued or not will be up to the administration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has pledged to drastically reduce restrictions.
In an interview at an aviation event, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated, “It’s very reasonable to say you have some compensation for your time and some protections.”
He stated that regulations about compensation for delays “would alter the economic incentive in a manner that encourages airlines to take on more work.”In May 2023, President Joe Biden stated that the USDOT would present a plan by the end of 2023 and that his government would draft regulations mandating airlines to reimburse passengers for disrupted flights.
Although the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and the European Union all have laws governing airline delay compensation, Buttigieg stated that the USDOT is not “copypasting” European regulations.
