China says it will take serious action to protect its interests after the US “severely violated” their trade ceasefire. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, Washington has “seriously undermined” the agreement reached during negotiations in Geneva last month, in which both nations slashed duties on items imported from one another.
The representative said that US activities have also seriously broken the agreement made by President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping over the phone in January. Trump said that China had “totally violated its agreement with us” on Friday, which prompted the remarks.
Trade Representative Jamieson Greer subsequently said that China had not been reducing non-tariff obstacles as stated under the agreement, although the US President did not provide specifics.
The US reduced taxes on Chinese imports from 145% to 30% during the trade ceasefire reached at a Geneva summit in May. Retaliatory duties imposed by China on US exports decreased from 125% to 10%.
Beijing claimed Monday that US breaches of the accord included revoking Chinese student visas, advising against using chips produced by Chinese tech giant Huawei, and halting sales of computer chip design software to Chinese enterprises. Many commentators were surprised by the Geneva agreement since it appeared that the two sides disagreed greatly on a number of trade-related topics.
