Days after a magnificent commissioning ceremony presided over by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, China’s most sophisticated aircraft carrier, the Fujian, went into service, according to state media.
The nation’s third warship, the Fujian, is outfitted with electromagnetic catapults that enable faster aircraft launches. Beijing now boasts the greatest fleet in the world in terms of sheer quantity of ships, and its launch represented a major advancement.
Under Xi, China has been rapidly growing its fleet, putting pressure on the US and its allies to catch up. According to official media, the Fujian’s electromagnetic catapult and flat flight deck allow it to launch three distinct kinds of aircraft.
The locally constructed ship is more potent than China’s first two carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong, both of which were constructed by the Russians, because it can transport aircraft with higher weaponry and fuel loads so they can hit enemy targets from a farther distance.
State media praised the Fujian as a “major milestone” in China’s naval growth. The only other nation in the world possessing an aircraft carrier equipped with Fujian’s electromagnetic catapult system is the United States.
