In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, a mosque inside a high school complex exploded during Friday prayers, injuring dozens of people. At a press conference, the city’s police chief, Asep Edi Suheri, stated that 54 individuals had been admitted to the hospital with injuries ranging from mild to serious, including burns.
Officials informed reporters that the suspect is a 17-year-old student undergoing surgery. The incident occurred in the North Jakarta area of Kelapa Gading at approximately 12:15 local time (05:15 GMT), and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police are still investigating the suspect’s background and potential motive.
To gather evidence and make sure there are no further explosive devices, a bomb disposal team has been sent to the state-run high school complex. According to the authorities, 17 people had minor injuries and three had significant injuries. According to local media, others have received treatment and been released.
A student at the school claimed to Indonesia’s government-owned news agency Antara that a student who other students frequently harassed had smuggled in a homemade bomb.
According to other students who spoke to Indonesian media, the suspect was a “loner” who frequently drew violent scenes and was discovered laying on the ground after the explosion.
