Following a nighttime Russian attack, over 600,000 residents in Ukraine’s Kyiv area were without electricity on Saturday morning. More than 500,000 of these were in the city itself, with the remainder in the surrounding area, according to Ukraine’s energy ministry. Missile and drone attacks on the city’s and numerous other regions’ energy facilities were blamed for the power outages.
According to officials, about 600 drones and 36 missiles were fired on targets throughout Ukraine overnight, resulting in three fatalities and several injuries. Despite US-led efforts to reach a peace agreement, Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukrainian energy and civilian facilities as the troubled country approaches winter.
A massive strike against Ukrainian military-industrial complex enterprises and the energy facilities that support their operation” was announced by Russia’s defense ministry. Later on Saturday, DTEK Energy, which provides services to properties in Kiev, said that over 360,000 families had their electricity restored.
According to Ukrainian officials, the midnight strikes damaged multiple residential buildings in addition to the electricity infrastructure. Early on Saturday morning, loud explosions could be heard all throughout Kyiv. Later, emergency personnel were observed tending to burning apartment buildings destroyed by strikes.
