In His First Christmas Speech, Pope Leo Calls for Courage to Put a Stop to the Bloodshed in Ukraine

During his first Christmas speech to crowds in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo urged Russia and Ukraine to have the “courage” to engage in direct negotiations to end the conflict. During his Urbi et Orbi address, which the pope usually gives to believers gathering in Vatican City on Christmas Day, he called for an end to wars worldwide.

When asked about Ukraine, the Pope responded: “May the clamour of weapons cease, and may the parties involved, with the backing and resolve of the world’s nations, find the courage to engage in sincere, direct and respectful dialogue.

During this most recent round of diplomatic attempts, direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine have not occurred, despite the US’s efforts to draft a deal that would satisfy both parties.

Pope Leo also bemoaned the unrest and violence afflicting other regions of the world, such as Thailand and Cambodia, where lethal border conflicts have resurfaced in spite of a ceasefire in July. He called for “to work towards reconciliation and peace” and the restoration of the “ancient friendship” between the countries of Southeast Asia.
