Javier Milei, Argentina’s president, and his sister are no longer the subject of a criminal inquiry over a cryptocurrency scandal. According to court documents, federal judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi dismissed the case against Milei and his sister Karina Milei at the prosecutors’ request.
The president of Argentina denied endorsing the recently introduced cryptocurrency $Libra, which crashed soon after he referenced it in a February 2025 social media post.
He claimed he acted “in good faith” as the cryptocurrency’s value rose before its crash, which caused significant losses for most investors. The news that the case has been dropped has not yet received a response from Milei.
The judge declared that “the reported events do not fall under a legal category” and found no evidence of “criminally relevant deception” before dismissing the case. When Milei wrote on X, formerly Twitter, about the $Libra coin, which he said would help finance start-ups and small businesses, accusations of fraud surfaced.
After the Argentine president posted a link to purchase the cryptocurrency, its value skyrocketed. However, he removed the message a few hours later, causing the cryptocurrency’s value to plummet and investors to lose most of their money.
