According to the Department of Health—Abu Dhabi, genetic testing will be a mandatory component of the pre-marital screening program for Emiratis in the emirate beginning on October 1.
The action is motivated by a desire to enable people to make the healthiest decisions for their families and themselves.
The inclusion came about due to the successful pilot program, which was started in 2022 in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre. During that time, about 800 couples underwent genetic testing in Abu Dhabi and received the support they needed to make decisions regarding the health of their future children.
According to the program’s data, 86% of couples were able to confirm their genetic compatibility, and only 14% of them required further assistance in order to create a suitable family plan based on their genetic results.
The test improves the capacity to identify genetic risks or possible hereditary conditions by including 570 genes for over 840 medical conditions. The test, which is the most crucial preventive measure when preparing to start a family, involves speaking with genetic counsellors and medical professionals to gain a thorough understanding of potential risks and available treatments.
