The frenzy to make Ghibli-style AI art with ChatGPT’s image-generation tool resulted in a record number of users for OpenAI’s chatbot last week, straining its infrastructure and momentarily limiting the feature’s use.
The viral fad saw users from all over the world fill social media with images modelled on the hand-drawn style of the iconic Japanese animation business, Studio Ghibli, founded by renowned director Hayao Miyazaki and known for films such as “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbour Totoro.
We added one million people in the previous hour,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an X post on Monday, comparing it to the one million users added in five days following ChatGPT’s explosive launch more than two years ago.
According to SensorTower statistics, active users, in-app subscription revenue, and app downloads hit an all-time high last week after the AI business released improvements to its GPT-4o model, enabling advanced picture generating capabilities.
According to the market intelligence organisation, global app downloads and weekly active users on the ChatGPT app jumped 11% and 5%, respectively, from the previous week, while in-app purchase income increased by 6%.
