The ‘Largest Majority’ in Modern History is Expected to be Won by UK Labour

On Wednesday, the last day of an election campaign that is predicted to bring back a Labour government after 14 years of Conservative rule, Britain’s political elites made a furious push for votes.

On Thursday, one of his closest allies conceded that the Tories would lose by a “extraordinary landslide,” but Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted he was still “fighting hard.”.

At the last minute, the Conservatives were dealt a further setback when Keir Starmer’s Labour was endorsed by The Sun tabloid, which is well-known for endorsing election winners.

According to polls, Labour is expected to win its first general election since 2005, and Starmer will become the party’s first prime minister since Gordon Brown resigned in 2010.

Starmer, 61, travelled the UK in an effort to bolster Labour support and caution against complacency in the final hours of the campaign.

At a gathering in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, where party supporters were distributing cakes with red ribbons—the party’s color—he told reporters, “You have to vote for it if you want change.”

He concluded, “I’m not taking anything for granted,” and boarded the same aircraft that transported the England football team to the European Championship in Germany for his flight to Scotland.

Sunak, 44, made a concerted effort to emphasise his frequently issued warnings that a Labour government would result in higher taxes and less robust national security—ads that Labour has characterised as a desperate attempt to hold onto power.
