Taking a more assertive stance than President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday to assist in achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that would lessen the suffering of Palestinian civilians. After meeting with Netanyahu in person, Harris declared on television that “it is time for this war to end.”
“I will not remain silent and we cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering,” she declared. In addition to affirming Israel’s right to self-defence after nine months of conflict, Harris claimed to have had a “frank and constructive” discussion with Netanyahu during which she expressed her serious concerns about the “dire” humanitarian situation in Gaza as well as the high death toll there.
With all eyes on the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, Harris essentially restated the long-standing message of President Joe Biden—that there needs to be an end to the horrific conflict in Gaza, where over 39,000 Palestinians have lost their lives—in a nutshell.
However, just one day after Netanyahu delivered a fiery speech to the US Congress in which he defended the war, declared “total victory” against Hamas, and made very little mention of ceasefire negotiations, she struck a more forceful tone regarding the urgency of the situation.
