Republicans in the United States House of Representatives moved President Donald Trump’s big tax-cut and spending measure to a final yes-or-no vote early Thursday morning, appearing to overcome internal party disagreements about its cost.
During a long midnight session, legislators passed the final procedural obstacle required to begin discussion on the measure in a 219-213 vote about 3:30 a.m. . It was unclear when they would hold the final vote.
As morning rose in Washington, the senior House Democrat, Hakeem Jeffries, was halfway through an hours-long speech in which he attacked the package as a gift to the wealthiest Americans, naming Republican members by name.
This one big, ugly bill this irresponsible Republican budget this terrible atrocity is not about increasing the quality of life of the American people,” he continued, making a stinging allusion to Trump’s hallmark legislation, One Big Beautiful Bill.
