The Russian Navy’s deputy commander was killed near the Ukrainian border, the Russian military announced. Major General Mikhail Gudkov, nominated by President Vladimir Putin to the highest naval position in March, was killed in what Russia’s defence ministry described as “combat work” in the western Kursk area, which borders Ukraine’s Sumy region. The government provided no more information regarding the operation.
Last summer, Ukraine conducted a surprise attack in Kursk. While its soldiers have been mainly driven out, Kyiv stated in June that it still controls tiny portions of the territory. One of Moscow’s most well-known setbacks since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine is Gudkov’s passing.
Ten other people were also killed in the event, according to Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of the Primorsky region in the Far East of Russia. Kozhemyako praised Gudkov as a devoted officer who passed while “carrying out his duty” when he made the news on Telegram.
A Ukrainian missile attack on a Russian command post close to the town of Korenevo, around 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the border, is thought to have caused the casualties, according to unverified accounts from Russian and Ukrainian military-affiliated Telegram channels.
