Farmers, mostly from Punjab, called for a large gathering at the two interstate borders in Haryana on Friday to show unity as the protest’s tenth month came to an end. They also announced that they would resume their “Delhi Chalo” protest foot march on December 14 in protest of the unfulfilled demands.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher told reporters at the protest venue on Tuesday that 101 farmers would march towards Delhi on Saturday to demand agricultural rights in front of the Parliament. He said that on Wednesday, the demonstrators will offer prayers in Sikh shrines to show support for the movement’s success.
Two days after their initial attempt, protesting farmers called off their foot march to Delhi on December 8 after some of them were hurt by tear gas fired by security guards stationed at Shambhu, the Haryana entry gate.
Farmers have been marching in support of their long-standing demands, which include loan waivers, reforms to enhance conditions in the agricultural sector, and a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Under the aegis of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, the farmers have been camped at the Shambhu and Khanauri border posts between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after the security forces halted their march to Delhi.
