The Honourable Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, witnessed the signing of a strategic partnership between Adnoc and ExxonMobil Corporation. Under the agreement, Adnoc will purchase a 35% equity stake in ExxonMobil’s proposed low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Baytown, Texas, US.
Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed bin Zayed emphasised the value of cooperation to support the UAE’s efforts to guarantee the security and sustainability of the global energy sector and to bolster its standing as a major producer and supplier of low-carbon hydrogen worldwide. He reiterated that the facility’s development is in line with the leadership’s plan to fund and promote clean energy initiatives in the United Arab Emirates.
The strategic agreement represents a sizable investment in US energy production and the global energy transition, aiming to meet the growing demand for lower-carbon fuels, reduce greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like industry, energy, and transportation, and expedite the transition to a net-zero future.
The facility is anticipated to be the largest of its kind in the world when it opens, assuming favourable government policy and the required regulatory permits. It will be able to produce more than 1 million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia annually and up to 1 billion cubic feet of daily low-carbon hydrogen, which is almost carbon-free due to the removal of about 98% of carbon dioxide.
