As the war in Iran continues to affect energy prices around the world, US President Donald Trump is facing more and more criticism over his plans to buy diesel from Russia. Trump said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to send 300,000 tonnes of diesel right away “to the American and global marketplace.” This would be the first of several shipments.
That’s true even though he signed a bill just a few weeks ago that lets the US put new sanctions and tariffs on countries that buy oil and gas from Russia. Some Republicans and Democrats in Congress have said this move is wrong because they think the deal breaks US law. Trump said that Russia would send an extra one million tonnes of diesel after the first 300,000 tonnes. In November, Russia would send another 500,000 tonnes.
The next shipment would be three million tonnes, sent “within a short period”, depending on the state of its refineries, which Ukraine has attacked during the war between the two countries. My top priority is lower prices for all Americans, but especially for our great farmers, ranchers, and truckers,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
