US President Donald Trump on Tuesday convened a summit of top technology executives in “an extraordinary gathering” of the brains who are “building America’s Golden Age”.Among the guests were leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, SpaceX, Meta and Google, all important players in the US AI business.
The conference comes after a number of industry CEOs and experts advocated for more regulation of AI, citing possible hazards to mankind. Trump was joined by the top tech leaders as he took questions from the media for almost 30 minutes after the closed-door meeting. The executives signed a “morally binding” statement which would act as a “form of protection” from the perils of AI, the president stated.
Under the deal Trump placed online, the companies are responsible for the safety of their own systems. The companies also promised to put in place measures to ensure the models work as intended and to rapidly identify and fix any problems.
They will also collaborate with “independent auditors” to evaluate if their artificial intelligence systems are operating as intended and to guarantee their platforms do not “hack or access technical systems in unintended ways.”
The deal was signed by Trump, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI president Greg Brockman, SpaceX’s Elon Musk and Nvidia top executive Jensen Huang.
