At least $300 million (£232 million) of the record-breaking $1.5 billion cryptocurrency heist has been successfully paid out by hackers believed to be affiliated with the North Korean government.
Two weeks ago, the thieves, who go by the name Lazarus Group, hacked the cryptocurrency exchange ByBit and took an enormous amount of digital tokens. Since then, preventing the hackers from successfully turning the cryptocurrency into usable cash has included a game of cat and mouse. According to experts, the notorious hacking squad operates almost around the clock, possibly directing the funds toward the regime’s military advancement.
Dr. Tom Robinson, co-founder of crypto investigators Elliptic, says, “Every minute counts for the hackers who are trying to muddle the money trail, and they are very skilled at what they’re doing.
According to Dr. Robinson, North Korea is the most skilled cryptocurrency launderer among all the illicit actors involved. I picture a whole room full of people using automated tools and years of experience to accomplish this. Their activity also shows that they only take a few hours off daily, possibly working shifts to convert the cryptocurrency into cash.
