On Thursday, US President Donald Trump convened a meeting of his cabinet secretaries to talk about Elon Musk’s initiatives to reduce government spending and staffing. The media said that it became heated.
According to the New York Times, Musk accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio of not reducing the number of employees at the state department. Specifically omitting any compliments on his work as America’s top diplomat, the newspaper reported that the tech magnate told Rubio he was “good on TV.
According to the New York Times, the billionaire also argued with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy about whether Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) task force had attempted to fire air traffic controllers, who were already rare in the Federal Aviation Administration. Since Trump took office in January, two US aircraft crashes have raised questions about Duffy’s department.
The Republican president allegedly stepped in after hearing the back and forth to clarify that while he still backed Doge, cabinet secretaries would now be in charge and the Musk team would simply offer advice. Rubio believed that the cabinet meeting was an “open and productive discussion,” according to a State Department spokesperson who talked to the publication.
