The US and Iran have held their highest-level meeting since 2018 after concluding their first round of negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program in Oman.
The US hailed the “direct communication” as crucial to reaching a potential agreement, and both nations characterized the meeting as “constructive” and promised a second round of talks will take place next week.
In 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from an earlier nuclear deal with Iran and other international powers. He has consistently stated that he would negotiate a “better” deal. The discussions are a crucial first step in determining whether an agreement can be reached.
At two and a half hours, the first meeting was short, apparently civil, and laid the groundwork for a second round. In Muscat, the capital of Oman, where the senior diplomat mediated the mostly indirect discussions, it was likely as good as it got when Iranian and US officials met.
These negotiations were the most important since Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement during his first term in office. Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s chief negotiator, issued a favorable decision.
“In my opinion, as the first gathering, it was a useful meeting done in an enjoyable and respectful environment, because no inappropriate language was used,” he said on Iranian state television.
