Trump Waives the Additional Tariffs on Laptops and Cellphones

The administration of US President Donald Trump has spared laptops, cellphones, and a few other electronic products from “reciprocal” tariffs, which include the 125% levy placed on imports from China.

Late Friday, the US Customs and Border Patrol released a notice outlining how the products would be exempt from the far higher Chinese import tax and Trump’s 10% worldwide duty on most nations.

The action follows US tech companies’ fears that, because so many devices are built in China, their prices might soar. Trump’s tariffs on China are seeing their first major respite, and one trade analyst called it a “game-changer scenario. The exemptions, backdated to April 5th, also apply to other electronic components and devices, such as memory cards, solar cells, and semiconductors.

Dan Ives, the global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, said on X, “This is the dream scenario for tech investors.” “Smartphones, chips being excluded is a game changer scenario when it comes to China tariffs.”

He went on to say that the tech industry as a whole and major tech companies like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft may exhale with ease this weekend. According to the White House, the exclusions provided businesses more time to relocate their operations to the United States.
