Drones and more chilled roadways are among the initiatives Saudi Arabia has announced to improve pilgrims’ pleasure and safety during this year’s Hajj season. Saleh bin Nasser Al Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, described Monday’s annual pilgrimage preparations. He said that using flexible rubberised roads, which are intended to make the journey easier for pilgrims walking, will increase by 30%.
He also announced the extension of chilled roads, which may lower surface temperatures by around 12°C, to combat the intense summer heat. One of the five pillars of Islam and one of the most essential spiritual pilgrimages in the faith, the Hajj, brings together millions of Muslims worldwide in Makkah each year. The multi-day pilgrimage consists of a series of extremely regimented religious ceremonies.
Over a million pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj. During a news conference on Monday, Salman Al Dosari, the minister of media said that “up until the end of yesterday, Sunday, the total number of pilgrims arriving from outside the kingdom via international ports exceeded one million and 70,000 pilgrims. The 29th day of Dhu Al Qadah is Tuesday. If the crescent moon is visible that night, Dhu Al Hijja will start on Wednesday, May 28, and Eid Al Adha will take place on Friday, June 6. Eid Al Adha will be commemorated on Saturday, June 7, while Dhu Al Hijja will begin on Thursday if the moon is not visible.
