Following a phone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Donald Trump has announced that he will travel to China. During the “very good talk,” the US president claimed to have responded by inviting him to the White House; however, no party has verified this.
Since Trump started a trade battle with Beijing in February, the two leaders have not talked since Thursday’s call. According to Chinese official media, the White House requested the call. The hour-and-a-half discussion, mostly on trade, “resulted in a very positive conclusion for both countries,” Trump tweeted on social media.
During the chat with Xi, Trump remarked, “He invited me to China, and I invited him here,” as he spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office. We both acknowledged that I would be going there with the first lady at some point, and he would hopefully arrive here with the first lady of China.
The Chinese readout of the call noted its invitation to the White House but not the reciprocal one. According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi allegedly advised Trump that the United States should “withdraw the negative measures it has taken against China. ”
