A disagreement over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments about Taiwan has caused at least two well-known Japanese films to be delayed in China. Cells at Work is one of the postponed releases! with the movie Crayon Shin-chan: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers, as reported by CCTV, the official Chinese media.
The BBC has confirmed that tickets for the popular Japanese animation Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle are still available, however CCTV reported that sales in China have recently decreased as the dispute intensified.
Earlier this month, Takaichi, who has been an outspoken critic of China and its actions in the area, suggested that Tokyo might use force if Beijing attacked Taiwan. Taiwan, where the government fled after China’s communist revolution, is seen by Beijing as a province that broke away and must be reconnected to the mainland.
After reevaluating the general prospects of Japanese films in China and the feeling among Chinese moviegoers, film distributors and importers have chosen to delay the releases, according to a Monday CCTV report.
The movie Crayon Shin-chan: Hot! The animated comedy The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers, which follows the adventures of a young boy and his companions, was scheduled for release in the upcoming weeks. The release of the live-action film Cells at Work!, which is based on a manga about human blood cells fending off viruses, has also been delayed.
