Chad Warns Sudan Of retaliation When a Drone Strike on Mourning Kills 17 People

Following a drone strike that killed at least 17 people and injured several others attending a funeral, Chad’s president has ordered the military to act against any further attacks from Sudan.

President Idris Mahamat Déby, dressed in military gear, attended an emergency security meeting on Wednesday evening, ordering the military to remain on high alert. He also ordered a “total closure” of Sudan’s border.

He denounced the raid on Tiné, a border village, as “outrageous and blatant aggression” against Chad’s territorial integrity. He stated that it occurred despite warnings to the two factions fighting in Sudan and a previous border shutdown.Last month, Chad blocked its border with Sudan “until further notice” in response to Sudanese armed groups’ persistent intrusions.

It did, however, permit “exceptional exemptions” on humanitarian grounds, with previous authorization from appropriate authorities. Residents of Tiné said the victims of Wednesday’s attack were mourners, with one telling Reuters that they had gathered at a house for a funeral service that included reading from the Koran.
