If verified, this would be the most recent in decades of US combat search and rescue operations. According to CBS, the BBC’s US partner, a search for a second crew member is still underway deep within Iran. One of the most difficult and urgent operations that the US and its allies prepare for is combat search and rescue (CSAR). Elite US air force units are frequently proactively stationed close to war areas where aircraft could be lost, and they are specifically trained for CSAR operations.
In a nutshell, CSAR missions are military operations designed to locate, assist, and possibly rescue persons in need, such as isolated soldiers and downed pilots. CSAR missions take place in hostile or contested circumstances, unlike traditional search-and-rescue operations, which may occur during humanitarian operations or following disasters. Operations may take place deep within enemy territory in certain situations, such as the alleged recovery mission in Iran on Friday.
Helicopters are frequently used for CSAR missions, with other military aircraft available to execute strikes and patrol the area and refueling aircraft in support. At least 24 pararescue jumpers would search the region in Black Hawk helicopters during a rescue mission similar to the one described in Iran, according to a former commander of a pararescue jumpers squadron who spoke with CBS News. They stated that the squad would be ready to leap the aircraft if necessary, and that getting in touch with the missing crew member would be their top priority once they were on the ground.
