US Lawmakers Reject a Plan to Prevent Trump From Attacking Iran

Just one day after a similar resolution was blocked in the Senate, a Democratic-backed bill to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to wage war on Iran has once again failed in the House of Representatives.

The House war powers resolution, which was narrowly defeated by a vote of 213-214, was mostly symbolic because, even if it had succeeded, it would have had little chance of overriding an anticipated veto from the president.

In both chambers, the majority of Republicans opposed the resolution, but some members have hinted that they would change their minds if the battle continued past this month. Trump has given varying estimates for how long the war will go, most recently stating that it is “close to over.”

The sole Republican to support the legislation in the House vote on Thursday was Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, while the only Democrat to oppose it was Jared Golden of Maine. Ohio’s Warren Davidson, who had previously backed the Democrats’ bid in March, abstained by voting present.
