Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s ex-Leader, Has been Placed under House Arrest, According to the Military

Aung San Suu Kyi, the incarcerated former Myanmar leader, has been placed to home arrest, according to official media reports. Since her removal from power in a military coup in 2021, the 80-year-old Nobel laureate has been held in jail, most likely in a military prison in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.

Military leader Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, announced in a statement that he had “commuted her remaining sentence to be served at the designated residence”. Aung San Suu Kyi rose to power in 2015 as Myanmar’s leadership implemented democratic reforms. Prior to that, she was a pro-democracy activist under decades of military dictatorship, and she had previously been confined under house arrest for over 15 years.

A photo of her sitting with two members of the military was circulated by state media. Her son, Kim Aris, expressed skepticism about the revelation, claiming he lacked proof that she was still alive. He dismissed the picture as “meaningless” because it was taken in 2022.I hope it’s real. He told the BBC, “I still haven’t seen any real evidence that she has been moved.
