China Urges for The Reopening of the Strait ‘as Soon as Feasible’ in Iran Talks

In conversations with his Iranian counterpart, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi advocated for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible”. The two met in Beijing on Wednesday, marking Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi’s first visit to China since the Iran conflict began.

Wang Yi also informed Araqchi that securing a long-term truce was a “urgent priority” and that negotiations must continue. He went on to say that Beijing was ready to help de-escalate tensions.

The meeting comes a week before US President Donald Trump’s encounter with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The leaders are expected to discuss the Iran conflict and the reopening of the strait.

According to official media, Wang Yi stated that China prioritizes securing a comprehensive ceasefire and opposes resuming hostilities. On the issue of the Strait, the world community is concerned about restoring regular and security passage across the Strait, and China expects that relevant parties would respond as quickly as possible to the strong appeal from the international community.

Beijing, which has attempted to mediate while avoiding involvement in the issue, has repeatedly pushed the US and Iran to conduct talks, a stance Wang emphasized on Wednesday.
