Meta Claims that Smart Glasses are “an Invasion of Privacy,” And Sales Are at An all-Time High

Problems with a recent generation of “smart glasses” appear to be mounting. However, in the upcoming years, some of the world’s largest internet businesses are expected to sell millions of pairs.

Men wearing Meta’s Ray-Bans, the company’s “smart” or “AI” spectacles, are increasingly approaching women as they leave the beach, enter a store, or stand outside. This is frequently done without the women’s knowledge or consent to record their responses to casual questions or pick-up lines.

The women are unaware of the films until they become popular online and are frequently abused. Since public photography is generally regarded as lawful, they have few legal options. One woman told the BBC she was told that removing a hidden recording of herself was “a paid service” when she asked the person who had posted it to remove it.

Since Meta was the first major tech company to introduce such a product in recent years, its glasses are currently the most popular on the market, accounting for almost 80% of all AI or smart glasses sales.

The glasses, made in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica and featuring the iconic look of Ray-Bans, have lenses that can display information, tiny speakers in the arms, and a practically undetectable camera in the frames. With a casual touch of the frames, people can begin filming or taking pictures.
