In an effort to defeat incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary run-off on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump has endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
By endorsing Paxton, Trump is endorsing a politician from Texas who has been the president’s close buddy for a long time, but who also has a lot of political baggage. In a state with a long history of choosing Republicans, many Democrats view Paxton as the weaker of the two contenders and are excited about what they see as a chance to change a Senate seat.
Cornyn’s fellow Senate Republicans, many of whom have worked with the Texan for decades and see him as a friend and partner, were shocked by Trump’s action. Paxton was referred to as “ethically challenged” by Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed her “supremely disappointed” feelings.
But Trump seems to have different tastes. A Texas lawmaker who has long been the president’s close supporter is receiving backing from the president. In his capacity as attorney general, he supported Trump’s attempts to reverse the 2020 presidential election results.
