Iran Claims a Deal with the US is not Imminent

Iran claims that although negotiations with the US have made significant headway, a settlement “is not imminent”. Esmail Baqai, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, made these comments after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted that an agreement would be achieved on Monday. In Tehran on Monday, Baqai stated, “It is accurate to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion.” “But to say that this means the signing of an agreement is imminent – no-one can make such a claim.”

According to reports, the memorandum of understanding calls for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and additional talks about Iran’s nuclear program. Although he later claimed he had told negotiators “not to rush into” a deal, President Donald Trump implied over the weekend that the parties were nearing an agreement. “We thought we might have some news last night,” Rubio said to reporters in Delhi, the capital of India, on Monday. Perhaps today.

Rubio cautioned, saying, “I wouldn’t read too much into it.” “It takes a little while to hear back from Iran.” According to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, US intelligence believes Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is holed up in an undisclosed location, making it difficult to communicate with his envoys and slowing down the pace of talks with the US. Khamenei was hurt in an Israeli strike on the first day of the war that killed his father and predecessor.
