Hungary Drops Veto on Ukraine’s EU Entry Ending Two-Year Standoff

Hungary removed its two-year veto on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, allowing the process to enter the next phase of discussions and concluding a political saga that brought relations between Budapest and Kyiv to an all-time low.

The elusive breakthrough came suddenly on Wednesday evening at a conference of ambassadors in Brussels, according to some diplomats. The Hungarian envoy announced the relaxation of the objections, enabling the 27 member states to unanimously start the procedure The first cluster is called basics, because it covers rule of law, human rights and the judiciary. It is the first cluster to open and the last to close in the complex process.

Ukraine and Moldova, informally paired as candidates, have been striving to unlock the first cluster for the last two years.But the veto exercised by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as his country acquired the reins of the EU Council’s presidency, stopped the trajectory.

Since then Brussels has been trying to get past the veto in numerous ways. The change came only after Orbán was soundly beaten in the polls by Péter Magyar, who promised to restore ties between Hungary and Ukraine.has 33 chapters organized in six thematic areas.
