A Republican congressman who missed dozens of votes during an unexplained medical break from the House of Representatives informed fellow lawmakers he was in hospital for depression during his 142-day absence.I was diagnosed with depression,” stated New Jersey’s Tom Kean in remarks after returning to work Tuesday. ‘It is physical, it is emotional and it is hard to appreciate the power of this illness until you have gone through it yourself.’
The 57-year-old Kean is running for a third term in a district GOP leadership fears could flip to a Democrat in the November midterm elections. His health has been questioned after he missed more than 140 votes out of the chamber.
Speaking about the mystery on the House floor, he said he visited hospital for testing some months ago owing to health concerns and “did not believe that this would result in a long-term stay”. He stated his physicians told him to stay in hospital after he was diagnosed and ‘explained to me this would be the quickest way to get better’.
