According to the EU’s climate monitoring service, increasing El Niño conditions in the Pacific contributed to the world’s waters reaching their highest recorded temperatures in July. Last month, the average sea surface temperature (SST) outside of the world’s polar regions—between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south—was 20.96C, surpassing the previous record of 20.89C, which was established in 2023.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, last month’s temperatures were 1.47C higher than the projected pre-industrial average, making it the joint second-warmest July on record worldwide. In the meantime, June and July were the hottest months in Western Europe’s history, and the region’s severe wildfires were fueled by persistently hot and dry weather.
In other news, the UK is expected to see its fifth heatwave of the year this week as ongoing dry weather puts more strain on water resources and may result in the formal declaration of drought in more locations. Sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and western Mediterranean regions of Europe hit all-time highs in July, causing widespread, intense, and severe marine heatwaves. In the tropical Pacific, where El Niño conditions are forming and are expected to intensify in the upcoming months, sea temperatures remained abnormally high.
