All US bombers have been removed from RAF Fairford, the UK military installation at the center of an incident under investigation by counterterrorism authorities. A Pentagon official confirmed in a statement on Sunday that it had transferred its bombers—roughly a dozen B-1s—from the base back to their American home stations. Following a significant incident on September 27 when authorities were alerted to three “suspicious vehicles” at the airbase, US media reported that the bombs were removed due to a new danger.
After being detained on suspicion of terror-related charges, five individuals were later freed on bond. Later, a sixth man—a UK-Iranian national—was also taken into custody and freed on bond. According to Whitehall sources, “there is an ongoing high tempo of threat from Iran to the UK, and it’s logical that US airbases would be pretty high on any targeting list” in respect to the dangers they are currently facing. Additionally, they have not contested Washington’s decision to respond to the Gloucestershire airbase incident. Additionally, the BBC has been informed by the US military and its British counterparts that it was an operational decision rather than a political one.
