According to the US Transport Secretary, nine persons were killed when a business plane crashed in a Florida area on Sunday. Around 12:50 EST (17:50 GMT), the collision occurred close to Cresthaven, around nine miles (14 km) from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s resort in the affluent Palm Beach County neighbourhood. No one on the ground was harmed, but photos show a sizable hole in the midst of a multi-lane road with flames and Learjet 60 aircraft debris strewn across it.
According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane had taken off from Austin, Texas, and was en route to the Bahamas. Before crashing, the jet was falling hundreds of feet per second, according to flight analysis. Someone in the aircraft can be heard reporting “moderate turbulence” and the crew was “managing the ice” in air traffic control audio that was captured just prior to the collision. The statement that the plane was “picking up precipitation” and “we need to climb” is then audible. Shortly after, the same voice reported that the plane was falling at a speed of 10,000 feet per minute (3,048 meters per minute).
