A senior UN official told the BBC that Ukraine is seeing its “toughest winter” since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The head of the UN development agency, Alexander De Croo, warned that a “humanitarian catastrophe” might occur if Russian attacks cut off access to water and electricity. Speaking in Ukraine, De Croo, the third-highest ranking official in the UN, charged Russia with deliberately attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. According to him, there is currently a “race against the clock” to fix the electricity system before winter arrives and temperatures drop.
Both Russia and Ukraine deny intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure, but they have been stepping up aircraft operations in recent months. In recent round-the-clock attacks on Ukraine, particularly Kyiv, Russia has been using faster, jet-powered drones that are more difficult to intercept. The infrastructure of Ukraine, including companies, industries, warehouses, petrol stations, and energy infrastructure, has been the focus of numerous strikes.
Drone attacks against gas, oil, and commercial distribution infrastructure are the main targets of Ukraine’s ongoing attacks deep into Russian territory. Targeting civilians is denied by both nations. After US President Donald Trump sent envoys to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv this weekend, deadly attacks have resumed.
