Craig Silvey, an Australian children’s novelist, was given a seven-month prison sentence for having and disseminating content that exploits minors. Judge Hayley Cormann described Silvey’s behaviour as “repulsive” and “degrading” when imposing her punishment. Police raided Silvey’s Western Australian house in January and confiscated a number of electronic devices, leading to his arrest. The 44-year-old was imprisoned in October while awaiting sentencing after entering a guilty plea to possessing and distributing child exploitation material in May.
The father of three is most renowned for his children’s book Runt and his critically acclaimed young adult novel Jasper Jones, both of which were later adapted into motion pictures.According to WA Today, Cormann remarked on Monday, “You have devastated and betrayed the trust of thousands of people, and you have let entire communities down.” Police claimed that when they arrived to raid Silvey’s home, he had open online discussions in which he talked about child exploitation.
Silvey had called himself “extremely open minded” and “obsessed with taboos” in them, the court heard. Detectives discovered pictures and films of other adults assaulting children on his devices, and he had talked to another member of a pornographic website about his sexual interest in youngsters as young as five.
