The developer of Fortnite, Epic Games, claimed on Friday that Apple was obstructing its plans to open a games store on iPhones and iPads in Europe. This is the most recent development in a bitter dispute between the two companies over who controls the iOS app ecosystem.
The video game publisher claimed that Apple had twice rejected the documents it submitted to launch the Epic Games Store because some buttons and labels resembled those of its App Store.
“We are adhering to standard conventions for buttons in iOS apps and using the same ‘Install’ and ‘In-app purchases’ naming conventions used across popular app stores on multiple platforms,” Epic stated in a series of posts on X.
Apple’s rejection is arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA (Digital Markets Act), and we’ve shared our concerns with the European Commission,” it stated. Requests for comment from Reuters were not immediately answered by Apple or the European Commission.
The gaming company Epic and Apple have been involved in a legal dispute since 2020. Epic claimed that Apple’s practice of collecting up to 30% commissions on in-app purchases made on its iPhone Operating System (iOS) devices violated US antitrust laws.
