As a precaution against Cyclone Dana, flight operations at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport would be halted for 15 hours beginning at 6:00 PM on Thursday.
Following a notification from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about Cyclone Dana, which is predicted to make landfall on the West Bengal coast by October 24, the West Bengal government declared on Tuesday that schools and other academic institutions would remain closed in a number of areas of the state.
According to the IMD, Cyclone Dana is expected to continue northwest and strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by the early hours of October 24. Between the evening of October 24 and the morning of October 25, it is predicted to move across the beaches of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island, close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara in Odisha, as a strong cyclonic storm with wind gusts of up to 120 km/h.
Both West Bengal and Odisha National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been put on alert. The Coast Guard, Army, and Navy rescue and relief forces are also on high alert.
