A war-damaged building collapsed in the Gaza Strip overnight, killing at least 21 people, including eight children, according to rescuers and doctors. Witnesses told the BBC that an Israeli hit more than a year ago had left the six-story structure in Gaza City’s Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood dangerously tilted to one side. Displaced family had resided inside because they were desperate, they claimed.
The United Nations and Egyptian teams joined the search for survivors, which was sluggish owing to a lack of equipment. Initially, rescuers from Hamas’s Civil Defence department had to use their bare hands.
On Wednesday afternoon, they said that the operation had ended after transporting 45 injured persons to hospitals. Sherif, whose sister was killed, stated that they were unable to find shelter, including a tent.Despite the danger, this was their last option. They were aware that it was likely to end tragically. A shortage of resources drove them to certain death.”
