The US has mandated that DeepSeek, a Chinese company, remove all artificial intelligence (AI) technology from the majority of government systems. All civilian government entities are prohibited from using DeepSeek or any technology developed using its AI models by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DeepSeek has been viewed as a disruptive factor in the continuing AI technology race because it is a potent AI model that is open source, which means it is free to access and less expensive to utilise.
The White House has blasted Chinese AI companies this year, although the DHS notification did not specify the precise security issues with DeepSeek. We have reached out to DeepSeek, the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, and the DHS for comment. Although the prohibition went into place at the end of July, the DHS made the directive public on Monday. The Department of the Treasury, the Department of State, and the Department of Justice are among the civilian agencies covered by the directive. Department of Defence agencies are not included, though. The prohibition comes after American companies and the Trump administration criticised Chinese AI.
