Nearly 15 years have passed since the well-liked Toyota 4Runner SUV, a favorite among off-road enthusiasts, saw any significant changes. But a whole new version is finally on the way, and the addition of a hybrid option is one of the most important changes.
Toyota pickups and the 4Runner have a great deal of engineering and historical overlap. Introduced around four decades ago, the original 4Runner was simply a modified four-wheel-drive Toyota truck. The two models are closely connected again in this latest version.
Like the Tacoma, the new 2025 Toyota 4Runner will be offered with Toyota’s iForce Max hybrid powertrain, bringing yet another well-liked vehicle to the company’s expanding lineup of hybrid cars. This is occurring as more buyers who are hesitant to purchase fully electric vehicles are increasingly turning to hybrids.
According to data from Edmnds.com, since the beginning of 2023, the percentage of new cars sold that were hybrids has increased from roughly 6%, slightly less than the percentage of electric vehicles at the time, to nearly 9%. Meanwhile, the market share of EVs is essentially unchanged from that time.
Up to 326 horsepower can be produced by the 4Runner’s hybrid system, which combines a 48-horsepower electric motor with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine.
