Encouraging kids—yes. Check the military honor guard. Marching band and cannon fire check. The reaction for Donald Trump last week was almost exactly the same as Vladimir Putin’s welcome outside the Great Hall of the People. Xi Jinping’s two high-stakes presidential visits, spaced only a few days apart, are precisely the image he wishes to convey to the world: speaking to everyone while remaining independent.
These visits serve as evidence for China that all paths now lead to Beijing due to its enormous economy and newly acquired diplomatic might.According to Samir Puri of Kings College London, “the new era of world affairs is less centered around the West.”China has a lot of latent power on the international scene, but it doesn’t always use it to resolve disputes in the most straightforward way; instead, it tries to use its stature more gradually.”
The optics were remarkably similar, with Xi playing host with assurance in the spotlight. However, the two visits had rather distinct political motivations. Putin seems to have a close personal relationship with Xi, having visited China over 20 times. However, the conflict in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed by the West have made him dependent on Beijing, which is currently Russia’s largest commercial partner and its largest oil and gas buyer.
