As Air Quality Advisories Spread to the US, More Than 800 Wildfires are Raging in Canada

Over 800 wildfires are raging throughout Canada, while several US states are also under air quality alerts. According to the US Air Quality Index program, a significant portion of the northern states of Michigan and Minnesota have “hazardous” air quality, and people are advised to stay indoors.

The US National Weather Service (NOAA) released an update on Thursday that included alerts for the Upper Midwest, the Great Lakes region, and the northeast. According to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System, there are currently 858 active fires in Canada, including 30 new ones on Thursday.

With lower concentrations of smoke high in the atmosphere drifting over the Great Lakes and above New York with hazy skies and likely redder sunrises and sunsets, the massive cluster of fires affecting northwestern Ontario is responsible for sending thick plumes of smoke and poor air quality across Thunder Bay and Toronto. Thursday’s air quality is deemed “very unhealthy” in western New York State and “unhealthy” in the New York City metro area.
