European MPs have raised concerns about sovereign AI after US business Anthropic revealed that access to some of its best AI models may be halted due to a mandate from the Trump administration.
The company received a letter from the government suspending access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for foreign nationals due to national security concerns. To ensure compliance, this ruling requires us to abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all of our customers,” Anthropic stated.
The announcement has sparked a surge of reaction across Europe, with many politicians claiming it should serve as a wake-up call for governments and advocating for stronger investment in domestic technology.
A foreign government turned off the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence model this week. British academics were researching it. British firms were trying it. It was being trialed in British hospitals. “Not anymore,” said Carns, who resigned as armed forces minister earlier this week due to a disagreement over defense budget.
